Abstract

This paper argues for the importance of evidence synthesis in Health Information Technology (HIT) adoption field and emphasizes the challenges identified by the authors in the process of attempting a systematic review. As an emerging field, HIT adoption research demonstrates a high level of heterogeneity in both conceptual and methodological approaches to research. As a result, traditional methods of evidence synthesis such as systematic review becomes problematic. Instead, the authors opted to conduct a scoping review to map existing evidence and to identify problems/gaps in research. This paper details the decision-making process and offers practical solutions for the researchers in HIT adoption field with the view of improving the quality of evidence and further advancing the field of research.
