Abstract
Toxic behaviour (TB) is a pervasive challenge in online gaming and esports, affecting the majority of players. This systematic literature review synthesizes 54 studies published between 215 and 225 across multiple academic databases, consolidating fragmented scholarship to provide a comprehensive understanding of TB. Using inductive content analysis, we highlight how individual traits, in-game dynamics, and platform design interact to shape toxic behaviours. Prevalence evidence indicates widespread exposure, with 66–86% of adults and 75% of adolescents affected. Definitions of TB remain fragmented, spanning broad, impact-focused, psychological, and taxonomic perspectives, and vary across genres and community norms. The review contributes to information systems literature by advancing theoretical understanding of toxic behaviours in esport and offering practical insights for targeted interventions, moderation strategies, and the design of healthier esports environments. Future research should focus on standardized definitions, longitudinal and objective methods, cross-cultural and genre-specific studies, and evaluations of technological and community-based interventions.
