Abstract
This paper examines the contextual factors that influence IT governance in the realm of lightweight IT, with a specific focus on Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and Low-Code/No-Code (LCNC) technologies. Building on a twofold literature review—covering IT governance context factors and RPA-specific research—complemented by empirical insights from expert interviews, the study identifies both internal and external factors that influence governance design. The findings show that while many contingencies parallel those known from broader IT governance, lightweight IT introduces distinct challenges, including regulatory compliance, organizational structures that bridge business and IT, and the strategic integration of RPA. Hybrid and federated governance models often emerge as effective responses, striking a balance between flexibility for innovation and mechanisms of control. The results highlight the context-dependent nature of lightweight IT governance and underscore the need for adaptive approaches. Future research should further investigate the dynamic interplay of these contextual factors.
