Abstract

Organisations are rapidly adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems to drive business growth and impact; however, up to 8% of AI initiatives fail, often due to a lack of strategic purpose. A well-defined AI strategy can provide much-needed direction on the investment, deployment, use, and management of AI systems. Yet, many organisations do not have an AI strategy, partly because the process of creating one can be challenging. Existing literature is also yet to capture the process of developing an AI strategy. To address this managerial and theoretical gap, this study explores how organisations are developing their AI strategy. Through semi-structured expert interviews analysed using the grounded theory method, we aim to create a process model for AI strategy development. This will ultimately contribute to both organisational growth through AI and the theoretical understanding of AI strategy formation. The following research-in-progress paper outlines the details for the ongoing study.
