Abstract
The hype and bright side of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in knowledge work has been broadly discussed, especially with the rise of generative AI. Yet, our understanding of how and why AI can lead to adverse effects remains limited. It is still unclear which influential aspects, and underlying mechanisms should be considered when assessing AI’s impacts on knowledge work? Drawing on a field study of AI innovation in geoscience exploration, this paper introduces the concept of the AI dilemma to reveal the integrated challenges AI poses across technology, knowledge work and business operations within knowledge-intensive environments. Using thematical network analysis, this study systematically identifies, and structures key aspects and dilemmas scenarios introduced by AI at the organizational level, supporting deeper critical sense-making. Finally, it provides empirical insights for knowledge-intensive organizations adapting to AI innovation and outline future research directions.
