Abstract
In the era of rapid digital transformation, optimising smart ecosystems is essential for enhancing operational efficiency, sustainability, and user satisfaction. This paper presents a roadmap for integrating Decentralised Autonomous Organisations (DAOs) into smart ecosystems to address challenges such as inefficient resource allocation, opaque governance, and scalability issues, which currently hinder the optimal performance of these ecosystems. By leveraging the unique capabilities of DAOs, such as transparency, autonomy, and collaboration, we propose a model to revolutionize smart ecosystem governance. The paper follows a Design Science Research (DSR) methodology, combining observation, theory-building, artefact development and simulation-based evaluation to develop and assess the effectiveness of a DAO-based smart contract for healthcare resource sharing. Our analysis highlights the potential of DAOs to streamline decision-making, foster collaboration, and ensure fair resource distribution. We also explore how blockchain and smart contracts enhance the reliability of DAOs within these ecosystems.
