Abstract

This study employs a social constructivist lens and the Social Construction of Technology (SCOT) framework to investigate the social dimensions of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within Information Systems (IS) research. It underscores the crucial role of interpretive flexibility and the negotiation among social groups in comprehending the development and societal integration of AI. This perspective expands the understanding of AI’s impact beyond technical factors, highlighting the significance of ethical considerations and societal acceptance in its evolution. By examining AI’s progression and societal implications through the viewpoints of diverse social groups, the paper demonstrates the advantages of a socially constructed analysis of the technology. It identifies gaps in the current literature, especially the lack of comprehensive studies encompassing all aspects of SCOT, and advocates for further exploration into the social construction of AI.
