Abstract
The potential of big data analytics in delivering value to organisations and society, in general, has been a topic of interest to researchers and practitioners. However, while we find many examples of big data analytics being valuable to organisations in both literature and practice, what are the negative implications of big data usage in a socio-technical context are not yet fully explored. Drawing on socio-technical theory, we develop a model that identifies the socio-technical factors and explains the possible negative effects of big data through the interplay between big data analytics, governance, and privacy. In this research-in-progress study, we are following a two-phase data collection approach combining focus groups and expert interviews. Our study contributes to the literature on big data analytics usage and data governance and provides insights to practitioners into possible negative effects of big data.
