Abstract

In the fast-changing Information Systems (IS) field, fashion seems to be a constant presence as various information technologies (IT) ebb and flow their ways through organizations and industries. An IT fashion is a transitory collective belief that a certain IT is at the forefront of practice. Understanding researchers' role in the genesis and effects of IT fashion depends on accurate detection of fashion in IS research. In this paper, we offer a method based on Topological Data Analysis (TDA) to detect the peaks of IS research topics as fashion indicators. Specifically, by analyzing the keywords for papers published from 1990-2022 in "AIS Senior Scholars' Basket of Journals", we found evidence of fashion every year for specific technologies, concepts, theories, and methods in IS research. Our work can help detect and understand shape of fashion across various fields and serve as a foundation for future studies in this research stream.
