Abstract

Digitization helps organizations to improve their administrative processes, while a pure focus on transforming analog activities towards a digitized process does not solve bottlenecks such as high processing times. Previous results in the field of supply chain management demonstrate that the right allocation of needed capacities can eliminate bottlenecks. While this effect – bullwhip – is well known and can be avoided by exchanging data to allocate capacities appropriately, we adapt the supply chain game towards a digital administration business process simulation game. We develop and integrate digital products such as the administrative processes (business trip) to illustrate the appearance of the bullwhip effect for digitized processes, and enable the identification of key drivers for successful transformation such as minimization of bottlenecks, contribute to a more efficient organization, and theory by the adaptation of supply chain management knowledge towards the digitization of organizations. Practitioners can use our results to evaluate digitization projects.
