Abstract

icrocomputer software for information management: case studies. Mel Collier, ed. (Gower, 1986, ISBN 0-566- 03555-3, price £15) This book consists of six short 'case studies' written by librarians who have succumbed to the lure of the microcomputer. The systems described are clearly for the most part pilot projects, carried out within medium to small libraries, and cover a wide variety of application areas, from Selective Dissemination of Information (I assume that is what SDI means in this context) to accessioning and stock control systems. A lengthy introduction summarises the range and scope of information technology in a library context and automation and the kinds of microbased software available for it. The more speculative and descriptive parts of this introduction may be of interest to those new to the field; regrettably the more specific parts seem rather out of date.
