Information Technology for Development

Abstract

The aim of this exercise is to investigate briefly the relationship between information systems design and the integration of public transport networks. The work is divided in four parts: the first section elaborates considerations on integrated transport and the likely difficulties in integrating them. The second part attempts to outline the components of an information system, the data requirements of public transport networks and a brief overview of the state of the art of computer information technology applied to public transport. Having this second part as a general framework, the third section describes a concrete base in a developing country from the public transport viewpoint, which is the proposal for Rio de Janeiro integrated transport network. The fourth section constitutes then a design exercise of an information system for a specific problem within Rio de Janeiro transport system. The occasional comparisons between developed and developing countries took as a reference the cases of UK and Brazil. There is a concern with developing countries to the extent that any application of an eventual development of this exercise would aim at the case of Rio de Janeiro.
