Abstract
The subject matter of this paper is a distillation of experience in microcomputer management within British Gas-South Eastern. It is quintessentially a personal viewpoint and hence I must point out that some opinions expressed may not accord with my employers. It is interesting to reflect on what forges one's current attitudes and opinions. Certainly one's own experiences are of paramount importance. But reading the experiences and ideas of others is also, I believe, significant. I have, for example, been fascinated by articles from Woz (who made it all possible) and Bill Gates (who even now continues to shape the way we use microcomputers). I have been simulated by the thought-provoking articles of John Dvorak and Jerry Pournelle. They give me an insight into the future. And I have been interested by numerous articles by micro-managers beset by one problem or another. In short, I have found the experiences of others in the field to be compulsory reading—invaluable in helping to shape my perspectives.
