Abstract
A leading management expert recently said that nonindustrial nations require mechanization to develop, industrial nations need more and more automation to be competitive, while post-industrial societies are highly dependent upon information technology. This is so, because in these societies timely information becomes the most critical factor in decision making. For the same reason, new developments in the field of computers are bringing about fundamental changes in the socio-economic setup of the western post-industrial society. In the highly interdependent world of today, no country, irrespective of her level of development, can hope to benefit by isolating herself from these realities. In this paper we have attempted to review the state of the art in banking automation, have taken cognizance of the local conditions and have, tried to define broad goals for future developments in our country. Describing the present EDP strategy of the National Bank of Pakistan, we have outlined an approach which can form the basis of exploring new areas of automation, and implementing them meaningfully with the collective efforts of all interested parties.
