Abstract
The Kingdom of Lesotho is a mountainous country sharing all its boundaries with one other country only, the Repub lic of South Africa. It lies between the southern latitudes 28° and 31° and between longitudes 27° and 30°, covering some 30,350 square kilometres, about the area of Belgium. Rainfall is variable and averages 700 millimetres over most of the country, most falling between October and April. Temperatures in the Lowlands vary between —2°C in winter and 32CC in summer, with a much wider range in the Highlands. The population is estimated as 1.5 millions in 1986.
