Description

The purpose of this study is to deepen the understanding of Internet of Things (IoT) implementation. Based on an activity system theory perspective, this article sheds light on implementation activities as they are frequently performed by IoT solutions providers to uncover configurations thereof sufficient for achieving commercial success. We conduct an exploratory comparative case analysis and use fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) to analyze data from a study with 52 IoT solution providers. FsQCA is a relatively novel, set theoretic method that has received increased interest in recent years. The results of the analysis indicate two sufficient configurations of factors. These configurations are conceivable as equifinal IoT implementation action repertoires for high commercial success. Knowledge of these action repertoires provides vision for complementarity effects among essential IoT implementation processes. In addition, it guides IoT solution providers by delineating design choices for IoT implementation.
