Abstract

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly embedded in workplaces, concerns arise about its unintended impacts on human cognitive engagement, skill development, and the ability to perform deep work – sustained, focused, cognitively demanding tasks. This study examines how over-reliance on AI influences deep work capacity directly and indirectly through cognitive engagement and hard skill acquisition. It also explores the moderating role of AI governance frameworks in mitigating potential negative effects. Drawing on Cognitive Load Theory and Control Theory, the research proposes a conceptual model and outlines a future empirical study using survey data from knowledge workers. The findings aim to inform both theory and practice by identifying strategies to balance AI integration with the preservation of critical human cognitive capabilities in increasingly automated environments.

The Role of AI in Transforming Workplaces and its Impact on Deep Work
