The unprecedented increase in the amount of data available for processing, coupled with recent advancements in intelligent technologies such as machine learning, large language models, generative AI, and design science for decision-making, has created novel, innovative opportunities for individuals, organizations, and society. These developments are making a huge impact across industries (e.g., healthcare, finance, energy, retail, and sports) when engaging in complex analytical tasks. The ability to manage big data and generate insights through these advanced technologies is also leading to significant organizational transformation. At a higher level, big data and analytics applications, driven by these innovations, are fostering positive societal impacts in areas such as health and well-being, poverty mitigation, food security, energy sustainability, and social entrepreneurship, contributing to a better future. The power of big data and data science applications in general is evident through the enormous attention that the creation and application of new data science approaches, such as machine learning, natural language processing, large language models, deep learning, and cognitive computing, are receiving. Businesses are creating innovative applications of advanced analytics by focusing on solving technical and business problems. However, the challenge of using these advanced technologies and data science applications for decision support, while ensuring digital equity and promoting social entrepreneurship, still remains. All stakeholders, including individuals, businesses, and governments, may need to come together to bridge digital inequity and foster societal transformation by building a more inclusive and responsible data ecosystem.
