Description
The role of Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) is crucial in safeguarding organizations against cyber threats, but it comes with a significant burden. CISOs often work long hours, face a constantly evolving threat landscape, and must balance budget constraints with the need for comprehensive security measures. However, the responsibility can lead to burnout, which not only impacts CISOs' well-being but also the organization's security posture. To prevent CISO burnout, it is crucial to identify the factors influencing it. Through interviews with 11 CISOs, we identified five types of stressors relevant to burnout, including organizational culture related stressors, resources related stressors, job responsibilities related stressors, contextual factors, and emerging stressors. Addressing these stressors and providing support to mitigate the identified stressors is crucial to prevent burnout, support CISOs' well-being, and maintain their effectiveness in their role, which is critical in protecting organizations from cyber threats.
