Abstract

The continuous nature of digital innovation presents a particularly challenging process for organizations to manage. We propose that IT governance helps to maintain the required balance of control and flexibility over IT resources by determining the appropriate decision rights and mechanisms for approving and managing this continuous digital innovation process. We use a Delphi study to examine the direction of influence, effectiveness, and ease of implementation of 34 IT governance practices in the oil and gas industry. We find that relational mechanisms are perceived as more effective and easier to implement than structures and processes, and we identify a minimum baseline of IT governance practices to foster continuous digital innovation. The results of this exploratory study suggest that IT governance plays an integral role in increasing an organization’s capacity to successfully innovate digitally.
