Abstract

Social media platforms offer a highly interconnected world-wide channels for everyone to create and disseminate information to millions of people in just a matter of few minutes, at little to no cost. While it has led to ground-breaking phenomenon in the area of real-time citizen-driven journalism, social media has also led to an increase in the deliberate circulation and impact of false information known as disinformation. However, there is a dearth of studies from behavioral IS perspectives explaining why disinformation is evolving in social media as a global issue. Various technical and legal measures have been applied to minimize the magnitude and frequency of dissemination of false news, however, false stories still remain a major issue on social media platforms. Thus, the main purpose of this study is to examine the disinformation sharing behavior from individuals’ dark triad personality traits and understand how individuals’ self-regulation mediates such disinformation sharing intention.
