Abstract

The rapid digital transformation taking place is opening new research opportunities on how organizations and individuals adjust to work conditions. Workers are interested in meaningful work experience and organizations are looking for ways to fulfill this desire, including redesigning work routines. Workers also seek meaningful work by enlisting in independent work that is more flexible and autonomous. Recent technological advancement has transformed independent work platforms such that they are now controlled by algorithms that are designed by companies running the independent work platforms. While this is happening, little is understood on the effects this control is having on independent work routines and work meaningfulness. This study proposes an investigation that discerns the impacts that the digital transformation of independent work could be having on stakeholders’ meaningful work experience from an institutional theory lens.
