Abstract

The Internet of Things (IoT) and blockchain technology are two significant developments in the field of information technology, and both are rapidly evolving and growing. Because the implementation of blockchain in IoT is a promising security strategy, research in this area is also increasing. This paper synthesizes publications in top-tier academic databases to answer the research question, “What are the future research directions for blockchain technology in IoT security?” Following a review protocol, 40 articles were examined and coded into one of four categories of future research: Transaction Management, Security Connectivity, IoT as a Service, and Login/Authentication. The results of this study may inform decisions about immediate and long-term research directions and provide insight into improving the security of IoT devices.
