Abstract
In today’s twenty-first century, we are witnessing the increasing role of chronic diseases as a major cause of death and morbidity globally, replacing communicable diseases, and draining the resources of an already strained health care delivery system. One of the most problematic chronic disease is diabetes. Recognising this growing challenge, we have focussed on the application of designing and developing a mobile solution DiaMonD (Diabetes monitoring device) to facilitate superior patient centred monitoring that supports better self-empowerment and thereby enables tighter glucose control. A critical success factor in sustained control of diabetes revolves around appropriate behaviour change with regard to diet and exercise. We hypothesise that changes in behaviour can be best achieved with focussed diabetic education but we wanted to understand how best to design and develop appropriate levels of education.
