Abstract

This paper discusses how human rights and women’s rights take shape in Chiapas, Mexico as a response to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People by giving an overview of women’s rights in the region, as well as the work that has been done in collaboration with Tseltal Maya communities in the Highlands of Chiapas. Specifically, this work aims to understand the information practices of Tseltal Maya women, their navigation of Indigenous information systems, as well as community information systems and ICTs. We hope to gain insight on how women use their information networks to advance and strengthen their rights and enact the UN Declaration at the local level.
