Abstract

In the current study, we conduct a critical literature review of longitudinal research in information systems. The longitudinal research approach observes a phenomenon over time, with the potential to provide rich chronical data. Information systems go through stages of life cycle. End users, organizations, and societies evolve due to or together with information technology implementation and adoption. Longitudinal approach can be powerful in discerning changes in user, organization, and societies. To take inventory of high quality longitudinal studies in top IS journals, we conducted literature search based on the keyword “longitudinal” in title, abstract, and keywords from the eight Senior Basket IS journals from 1995 to 2018. Based on preliminary data analysis of 150 identified papers, results showed that longitudinal approach is underrepresented in published articles in top journals over more than twenty years. There is an imbalance in research topics and regions where the method has been used.
