Description

The central motivation for a Health Information Exchange (HIE) system is enabling healthcare providers to share and access patients’ electronic medical information. The availability of patients’ information at the point of care leads to the delivering of higher quality care at a lower cost. While patients and insurance companies receive tangible benefits from using HIE, healthcare providers do not have financial motivation to use the HIE system. This study aims at promoting HIE by addressing financial barriers for healthcare providers. We design an economic framework in which the total benefit accruing from HIE usage is shared between the various entities engaged in the system. This study has significant implications for making HIE business effective and enable health policy makers to make more efficient decisions.
