Description
We start with a particular sociological perspective about desires and opportunities as motivators of human action, and from it we develop a parsimonious model to explain the purposeful use of the Internet by individuals. The model is based on skills and attitudes as key constructs, what seems to be an exciting alternative view as compared to extant models of adoption and use of information and communication technologies (ICTs). The model was tested in a Brazilian sample of 203 Internet users. The model’s origin in that particular sociological perspective maybe helps to explain why the ICT field needed roughly two decades to move from a digital inclusion perspective to a digital effectiveness perspective. We reinforce the potentially positive aspects of human-computer interaction, and the need for ICT education both in terms of technology and the information it conveys as a powerful resource for human intents.
