Ideology and Microblogs: Traversing National Borders

Jose Ortiz, University of Auckland

Description

The literature recognizes the role of social media in facilitating the exposure to ideologies beyond one’s immediate interpersonal social networks. However, studies concerning the role of social media in the propagation of ideologies have focused on grievances felt by local populations with particular attention to protests against repressive regimes, government policy or perceptions of fraudulent democracy. In this study, we contend microblogging services like Twitter play a major role in the dissemination of ideologies worldwide enabling users to adhere to ideas that align with their values and norms regardless of filling a position within a particular organization. We collected Twitter data from a major social movement organization in the global justice movement and present an exploratory analysis based on density-based clustering and kernel density estimation to substantiate how groups of individuals at different regions worldwide adhere to ideologies concerned with globalization and its socioeconomic impact.
