Description

Multilevel research is becoming increasingly common in management, but lags in the information systems field despite the inherently multilevel nature of the phenomena we study. This paper contributes to existing work in multilevel research by helping to clarify the nature of the relationships across levels in multilevel models. This is one of the most challenging aspects of multilevel theorizing and we seek to provide a framework to better understand the linkages. Through a review of the literature in information systems that has developed or tested multilevel models, we observe that each of our hypothesized causal linkages exists within current multilevel research though they vary in the extent to which they have been observed.

Multilevel Research in Information Systems: An Exploration of Causal Linkages
