Thinking in Terms of Time: Information Systems and Intuition

Author #1

Abstract

This paper focuses on the uncertainty that is characteristic of life in the information society and discusses intuition as a manner of gaining access to a deeper knowledge, able to cut through the knot of information overload. It discusses this notion from the perspective of the philosophies of the virtual of Henri Bergson and Gilles Deleuze. Departing from these philosophies the paper seeks to start and inspire a thinking about information systems that takes notice of this intuition. This means that information systems are not just about the domination of space, but also should address the human being in time. Drawing lessons from this approach could diminish human uncertainty and ‘angst’ in dealing with information (systems). Some preliminary thoughts on the role of intuition and imagination in the design and understanding of information systems are presented as one way of thinking how wisdom could improve mere calculation.
