Description
This study aims to understand how online identity interruption can impact psychological distress and how psychological distress drives coping intentions in using synchronous social messaging services. Specifically, this study identifies two key technological features of synchronous social messaging, namely content perishability and content visibility, that will be especially relevant to identity interruption associated with accidental embarrassing exposures. Furthermore, drawing on the coping literature, we focus on the pessimistic coping strategy and the optimistic coping strategy to identity the key behavioral responses. To operationalize the study, a 2x2 full factorial laboratory experiment will be conducted. Results are expected to enrich current understanding on self-expression and regretful feeling associated with accidental embarrassing exposures. Expected implications are discussed.
