Description
Open strategy is a transparent, inclusive and IT-enabled strategy practice. In this paper, we develop a theory on how strategy practices emerge and dissolve. This theory is based on our study and analysis of CarCo’s open strategy community. This IT-enabled open strategy effort ran in the period from 2008 to 2015. We used the “Gioia methodology” to analyse and theorise the case. We developed a theory on the “lifecycle” of IT-based strategy practices along four phases: (1) emergence, (2) negotiation and sensemaking, (3) stabilisation and routinisation and (4) dissolution. The paper describes both the theory as well as the data of the case study that led to its formulation. The paper contributes to our understanding of open strategy as a practice and, more broadly, to our understanding of the temporary nature of strategy practices.
