Abstract
A classification of information systems is used to show that the nature of systems affects the manner of system development and the style of development. This is extended to suggest the technical and business skills required by the developers and their personality attributes. The implications for teaching are examined in terms of courses and style. The contrast between the life of a system and the career paths of the developers is commented on.
