Description
Information systems researchers have acknowledged the importance of understanding technostress. To do so, they have primarily taken an interactional approach, which enables them to focus on the antecedents and outcomes of an aggregate of individuals using quantitative analysis tools. However, extant research indicates that stress can also be understood from the perspective of the individual, and that relationships, appraisals, and context are critical. This aligns with the transactional approach to stress, which underscores that the essence of stress is comprised of a contextually-dependent, meaning-centered relationship the individual has with his or her environment. In this paper, we discuss how to regard and to study technostress using a transactional approach through the vocabulary of affordances. An example is provided in the context of healthcare technology.
