Systèmes d'Information et Management

This research was conducted within the general framework of the study on man-machine interaction. Its aim was to investigate how cognitive style DIF and the rhetorical structure of the input material affect information search in the interactive setting of NIT. The experiment was carried out in two stages. In the first stage, the 50 subjects were invited to take a GEFT test in order to determine the type of attitude they assumed during the processing of information. In the second stage, the subjects were divided into two groups of equal number. They were then requested to accomplish an information search from a data base of statements with hypertext links. Each group was presented with a hypertext version "normal structure vs an improved structure". Search time was measured in hundreds of seconds and search methods and answers to questions were monitored. Results revealed a correlation between the DIF and the real-time search for information in a computerized document and the distribution of the text structure leading to improved performance.
