Abstract
Surgical intervention for the twenty-first century must include the ability to meet and exceed benchmark results for surgical care and positive patient outcomes. Included in this equation is the ability to incorporate visual documentation and information sharing with traditional reporting methods. The University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital has taken a multidisciplinary team approach to their use of technology to deliver cutting edge healthcare, comprised of surgeons, nurses, anesthesia, and biomedical professionals, as well as, informational technology professionals. Irrespective of the physical location of the clinical expert, high-tech image routing capability for immediate consultation, diagnosis, or teleconferencing provides a means for timely and expert decisions regarding patient care. This paper addresses the systems developed and implemented, technology used, and the continuing improvement of patient care through the use of these innovative technologies.
