Abstract

This PDS will explore how AI tools like SCITE, Web of Science, and iThenticate shape the ethical dimensions of academic research processes. As AI increasingly transforms scholarly practices, this gathering will create a forum to address challenges and opportunities in maintaining academic integrity while leveraging AI's capabilities. AI technologies designed to enhance research efficiency, evaluate source credibility, and ensure scholarly integrity change our work. Tools like SCITE, which automates citation verification and evaluates research impact through citation analysis, and iThenticate, which detects potential plagiarism and text recycling, represent just the beginning of AI's influence on academic practices. Generative AI tools create new possibilities and challenges, necessitating ethical frameworks. Considerations include, Integrity Verification vs. Surveillance: Balance the benefits against concerns about creating surveillance environments in academia. Algorithmic Transparency: Understanding the criteria by which academic work is being evaluated. Equity and Access: Differential access to AI research tools creates new inequities so how can we ensure these technologies don't exacerbate existing disparities? AI as Collaborator: Beyond detection functions, AI tools can enhance research capabilities while maintaining scholarly attribution and intellectual ownership. Adapting Integrity Policies: Policy revisions to address AI-assisted research while preserving core values of originality and attribution.
