Systèmes d'Information et Management

Abstract

Through a cognitive analysis of the managerial activity, we have studied the use of electronic mail for the leading role practice. Three abilities necessary to use the email have been drawn from this: 1) to be able to identify opportunities so as to lighten the prospective memory, 2) to be sufficiently explicit so as to meet by anticipation the informational needs of the absent interlocutor, 3) to be able to identify the complementary nature between communication media so as to combine their use according to the situation. Concerning the influence of the manager's hierarchical level, one hypothesis has been drawn from the study: in a large organization, the manager whose position is close to the CEO will deliberately use the email so as to exercise his or her leader role.
