Abstract

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly prevalent in healthcare, concerns about transparency and trust have emerged. This research-in-progress paper investigates the relationship between AI transparency and trust in healthcare AI systems and providers. The study examines the impact of transparency on trust in AI and on the healthcare provider and while moderating for demographical variables. Both AI reliance and AI transparency are hypothesized to be positively correlated with higher trust in healthcare AI and healthcare providers. The study employs a controlled two-by-two scenario-based experiment with high-low AI reliance with high-low AI transparency to test these hypotheses. Trust is also examined as a consequence of AI transparency, trust in AI, and trust in healthcare providers.

This research addresses critical gaps in the literature by contextualizing transparency within key variables such as AI usage and patient health status. Findings will contribute to the ongoing discourse on AI transparency in healthcare and provide insights into fostering trust and enhancing AI adoption. As healthcare increasingly relies on AI-driven decision support systems, understanding how transparency influences trust is crucial for its effective integration into clinical practice.
