Abstract
The rise of videoconference meeting assistants using artificial intelligence (AI) has impacted the way information systems (IS) researchers conduct their data collection. Not only can AI meeting assistants help to manage the schedule of online data collection, but these features can also transcribe live conversations and a meeting summary. Previous IS studies have explored ethical challenges surrounding online data collection, while the discussion on AI meeting assistants from an ethical lens is limited. This study offers a reflective perspective on the use of AI meeting assistants when collecting data on student mothers’ use of mobile devices. Ten online interviews were performed via Zoom Meetings integrated with Otter.ai services between February and May 2023. Lessons learned were drawn on ethical implications in IS research, including data ownership, intellectual property management, and implicit speech bias. The study calls for IS research guidelines on online data collection with the help of AI meeting assistants.
