Description
The twin transition toward net-zero emissions and digital transformation has placed small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in an institutional deadlock: compliance is expensive, environmental data is hard to verify, and sustainability spending rarely earns the credibility that banks demand. While prior research has largely focused on resource-rich incumbents, this study examines how a resource-constrained startup, BaaSid, utilizes an "Entrepreneurial Digital Artifact (EDA)" to reconcile these institutional misalignments. The findings indicate that change is ignited by "Entrepreneurial Alertness" to market voids left by inadequate trust intermediaries. Digital agency then unfolds through three mechanisms: "intention-driven legitimizing," "resource-leveraged sensemaking," and "capability-enabled reconfiguring." Drawing on Emirbayer & Mische’s (1998) chordal triad of agency, this study inductively develops the "Resource–Intention–Capability (R-I-C) Evolutionary Model." This model offers a processual lens for understanding digital-age institutional entrepreneurship under conditions of resource constraint.
