Description

This research-in-progress examines the role of digital leaders in managing paradoxical tensions during digital transformation in healthcare organisations. Digital transformation brings competing demands, requiring leaders to balance tensions in performing, organising, belonging, and learning. Using a multiple case study approach, we analyse how digital leaders in hospitals navigate these complexities, ensuring alignment with broader business strategies and fostering a supportive culture. Findings suggest that digital leaders adopt “both-and” or “either-or” strategies based on contextual factors to address competing demands. This study offers insights for practitioners and researchers, highlighting leadership strategies to manage digital transformation's inherent contradictions and pave the way for further research on digital leadership skills and the influence of emerging technologies.
