Description
Cooperative banks are the distinctive subset of the Indian banking industry, dedicated to uplifting underprivileged socioeconomic groups. As Indian cooperative banks strive to modernize, integrating digital tools and technologies has reshaped employee competency requirements. This study investigated the critical competencies influencing job performance in South Indian cooperative banks and examined the impact of job competencies on employee performance variation. To define job competencies, this study used mixed approaches including the checklist method, interviews, questionnaires, and an extensive literature review. In line with the Competency-Based Theory of Performance Management, this study revealed that emotional, social, and cognitive intelligence competencies have a significant positive impact on job performance. The study developed and validated a competency-based framework for evaluating job performance, highlighting a competency-performance matrix and quadrant-based training recommendations that reveal emotional, cognitive, and social competencies as key predictors, offering practical insights for HR development and extending McClelland’s theory to the cooperative banking context.
