Description
With the prevalence of technological products for ageing in place, the concomitant age-based stigma-related issue has emerged as a critical ethical concern, attracting increasing interest from both the industry and academia. To consolidate the existing knowledge, this study adopts a systematic literature review approach to summarize the research trends and patterns of the literature on age-based stigma in gerontechnology. Our analysis of the 36 identified articles indicates that previous studies mainly focus on the formation, spreading, mitigation, and effects of age-based stigma in the context of gerontechnology. There is a lack of an integrative framework guiding future research. Integrating the perspectives of identity threat models of stigma, transactional models of stress and coping, and the appraisal theory, this study adopts the stigma product evaluation model (SPEM) to serve as an organizing framework for understanding the focal phenomenon and deriving future research directions. Limitations of this review are also discussed.
