PACIS 2020 Proceedings
Harvesting the uncountable benefits of ICT advances has been one of the key goals of the Information Systems field, in particular how research findings can inform professional practices and policymakers on how to improve and develop our societies. Teaming up with these efforts, we tackle in this study the aspects of education, elearning, and language learning by Syrian refugees in Germany as an essential driver of refugee integration and social inclusion into the hosting society. We also discuss gender differences in harvesting e-learning opportunities among refugees in Germany. Towards this goal, we use a qualitative research approach to examine to which extent digitization can create an inclusive society. We conducted face-to-face interviews with Syrian refugees in Germany, with the main focus being on their use of e-learning opportunities and how these services contribute to their social inclusion into the community. This paper contributes not only to the body of education and e-learning research, but it also offers perspectives on development that benefit policy and practice with the aim of “improvements in the lives of people.”
