Abstract

The purpose of this study is to assess cross-generational differences with respect to using AI in the classroom. Specifically, the goals of this study are: (1) To examine attitudes toward using AI, and (2) To understand generational views on the uses and value of AI. During the fall, 2024 term, students representing different generations were asked to share their perspectives and concerns about Generative AI. The pilot investigation included students in an MBA-level class and an undergraduate class. The classes received a Generative AI assignment and a brief survey asking them how AI should or should not be used. When we analyze the data across generations, there are commonalities in attitudes and beliefs. Several beliefs stand out: (1) Problem- solving and analytical skills should be developed independently; (2) AI can be used for routine tasks but should not replace logical reasoning skills; and (3) Some AI use is acceptable as long as it does not interfere with critical thinking, The survey of students’ attitudes and beliefs on the uses of AI in their courses and programs is interesting, insofar as these attitudes carry- over into the workplace. Phase 2 of the study will focus on attitudes, behavior, and uses of AI in the workplace.
