Abstract

The institutional press sets public agendas and brings societal changes. Yet, digital transformation profoundly altered its practices. This study endeavors to answer how the agenda-setting processes of topic selection and framing have changed. Focusing on one of the most contested episodes in U.S. press history, the digital transition of The Times-Picayune in New Orleans, we apply a computationally intensive method to analyze editorials across print and online editions. Using the affordance-based institutional logics perspective as our theoretical lens, we argue that expanding IT affordances reshape agenda-setting by narrowing topical diversity, diminishing critical perspectives, and reducing the visibility of coverage. This study demonstrates how online news platforms mediate the press’s societal impact by transforming its ability to influence public discourse.
