Abstract
This research integrates emotions into the conceptualization of affordances to better explain and capture the mechanisms by which affordances actualize into effective use of information technologies (IT) during acute crises. To contribute to the existing literature, we explain affordance actualization based on three interactive dimensions: needs, emotions, and IT features. We rely on extant literature on affordances and effective use to propose a configuration theory using a deductive theory-development approach. The configuration theory development process identifies eight configurations that we cluster into three groups: no effective IT use, challenging effective IT use, and effortless effective IT use. We end with the contributions and implications of this paper for research and practice.
