Abstract

While social media platforms enhance the accessibility and diversity of information, it coincides with a growing concern over content popularity concentration. This pattern is especially consequential in the context of Generative AI (GenAI) discourse. Hence, this study examines the factors driving content popularity concentration with respect to GenAI discourse by conceptualizing the information gap with two distinct dimensions namely volume gap and topic divergence. We find that both pronounced volume gap and high topic divergence are significantly associated with heightened concentration of popular content. Additionally, uncertainty framing attenuates the positive effect of volume gap on content popularity concentration while amplifying the impact of topic divergence. These insights carry important implications for social media platform design and communication management strategies.
